Myndos Gate
Bodrum Municipality
Myndos Gate is thought to have been built in the 360s BC. Located to the west of Halicarnassus, it was one of the main entrance gates to the ancient city. It was constructed by Mausolus, the Karian Satrap, as part of the city walls and served as a strong defensive element protecting Halicarnassus.
One of the two monumental gates of ancient Halicarnassus, Myndos Gate consists of two imposing towers and an inner courtyard behind them, through which access to the city was provided. The first phase of restoration work on the walls and towers to the north of the gate was completed in 1999.
The defensive ditches that helped repel Alexander the Great’s attacks on Halicarnassus in 334 BC were created in the 4th century BC.
The area also contains vaulted tombs believed to date from the 4th century BC, as well as burial structures from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
