The future of agriculture and food security challenges were discussed in a series of focus group meetings organized under the FrontAG Nexus Project. Held on January 22, the meetings were moderated by Assoc. Prof. Çağdaş Gönen from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University and hosted by the Climate Change & Zero Waste Directorate of the municipality.
Representatives from the Bodrum District Directorate of Agriculture & Forestry, the municipality's Agricultural Services & Parks and Green Areas Directorates, as well as NGOs including the Bodrum City Council, Bodrum Chamber of Agriculture and TMMOB, attended the discussions.
The participants emphasized the significance of efficient water management and soilless farming in ensuring food production amid growing environmental concerns. Hydroponic and other soil-free agricultural methods were highlighted as crucial solutions for preserving water and soil resources. Key recommendations included developing infrastructure for water conservation, providing financial incentives and training programs for young entrepreneurs, introducing and expanding new technologies and educating farmers on sustainable water and agricultural practices. Additionally, strengthening support policies for small-scale farmers was stressed.
The sessions also provided insights into the EU-funded FrontAG Nexus Project, which integrates water, energy, food and ecosystem (WEFE) considerations to promote sustainable farming. The Climate Change & Zero Waste Directorate and Parks & Green Areas Directorate presented their joint greenhouse project, showcasing the benefits of soilless farming technologies in optimizing resource use.
The discussions concluded with a strong emphasis on collaboration between local governments, public institutions, and civil society organizations to ensure agricultural sustainability in the region.
