Mayor Mandalinci Joins Mandarin Harvest, Strengthening Support for Local Farmers
Mayor Tamer Mandalinci took part in the mandarin harvest, reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to supporting local agriculture and revitalizing the iconic Bodrum mandarin. As part of the initiative, 50 tons of Bodrum mandarins will be purchased directly from 37 local producers, with 20 tons to be distributed at the upcoming Bodrum Mandarin Festival.
During his visit to orchards in neighborhoods; Müskebi, Dereköy and Gümüşlük, Mandalinci joined farmers in harvesting the fruit and emphasized the municipality’s dedication to preserving Bodrum’s agricultural heritage. “We are determined to keep the traditions that define us alive”, Mandalinci stated, inviting residents to the Bodrum Mandarin Festival in Bitez on December 15.
The municipality’s Agricultural Services Directorate also collaborated with farmers to address pest control challenges, such as the Mediterranean fruit fly, by providing innovative traps. During the harvest, Mandalinci witnessed the success of these traps, which helped farmers avoid chemical treatments and increased yields.
Local producers expressed gratitude for the municipality’s support, which has helped restore the economic value of Bodrum mandarins. Farmer Halil İbrahim Dumanlı remarked, “Thanks to the municipality, our mandarins are once again worth something.”. Similarly, Bitez farmer Yıldırım Kemal Yıllıkçı praised the mandarins’ unique flavor and aroma, calling them the best in the world.
Mayor Mandalinci’s participation in the harvest and the municipality’s ongoing support highlight Bodrum’s dedication to sustainable agriculture, local traditions and community well-being.
