PROTOCOL WITH CHAMBER OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

A signing ceremony was held to sign the "Common Service Project Protocol for Establishing an Inventory of Existing Building Stock & Evaluating Building Safety in Terms of Earthquake Risk" a collaboration between Bodrum Municipality and the Chamber of Civil Engineers (İMO) Muğla Branch.

Mayor Ahmet Aras hosted the protocol ceremony, attended by Engin Fırat Ata, Chairman of the Chamber of Civil Engineers Muğla Branch, Ahmet Özakçan, Branch Secretary and the board of directors. Also present were Metin Soylu, İMO Bodrum Representative, the board of directors; Emel Çakaloğlu, the General Coordinator of Bodrum Municipality and members of the press.

The joint service project protocol aims to create an inventory of ten thousand structures within Bodrum district boundaries and assess the safety of these buildings in terms of earthquake risk over a 6-month period.

Highlighting Muğla's seismic risk, Engin Fırat Ata, Chairman of the Chamber of Civil Engineers Muğla Branch, stated: "Today's protocol signing is related to the inventory of structures. We will inspect ten thousand buildings in Bodrum, providing data on whether these structures pose earthquake risks based on direct observations."

Providing details on the planned activities, Metin Soylu, İMO Bodrum Representative, said: "We will conduct a survey for ten thousand blocks, aiming to plan for earthquakes before they become disasters. We'll identify risky areas and assess the potential damage to buildings. Evaluations will consider observations and regulations."

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration promoting resilient cities, Mayor Aras stated, "Initially, analysis will focus on ten thousand blocks built before 1999. This will broadly outline seismic risk. If necessary, more detailed analyses will follow with building owners' consent. The key is to assure citizens that their homes are safe, fostering confidence that buildings won't endanger lives during earthquakes. We must instill this confidence. We're conducting this study to measure Bodrum's resilience. Following the 6-month study, we'll continue collaboration with our chamber of civil engineers and other civil society organizations, guided by the prepared report."

The programme concluded with the signing of the protocol after addressing press queries.
