STATEMENT FROM MAYOR ARAS REGARDING SAZKÖY AND WATER PIPE EXPLOSIONS
10.08.2023
Ahmet Aras, the Mayor of Bodrum held a press conference to provide information to the public about the decision related to the 1/1000 scale Implementation Zoning Plan for Ecotourism/Rural Tourism Facility Area Purpose in Sazköy Neighborhood, which was one of the agenda items of the August Municipal Council Meeting.
The meeting took place at the Bodrum Municipality Planning and Urbanism Directorate and was attended by the Mayor Aras, the Deputy Mayor İlknur Ülküm Seferoğlu, the Municipal Council Member Dursun Göktepe and members of the press.
"The Resolution is in compliance with laws and regulations"
In his comments on the resolution regarding the "1/1000 scale Implementation Zoning Plan proposal for Ecotourism/Rural Tourism Facility Area Purpose for the properties registered under parcel numbers 25, 30, 31, and 32 of Block 118 in Sazköy Neighborhood, Kızılören Location," based on the report dated July 26, 2023, and numbered 2023/12 by the Planning and Public Works Commission, Mayor Aras stated that the resolution adheres to laws and regulations. He emphasized their commitment to an administration that is always fair, just, transparent and accountable. Expressing disappointment over the unethical portrayal of the process as unlawful, Mayor Aras clarified that the resolution had been examined for its legality and alignment with regulations. He underlined, "The Sazköy area is not within forest boundaries. An area within the forest cannot be designated for ecotourism."
"That area is not fertile wet agricultural land"
Mayor Aras shared detailed insights with the press about the resolutions received from ministries, the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), Metropolitan Municipality and other relevant state institutions. He stated, "That area is not fertile wet agricultural land. Those who describe it as an agricultural and forest area are not providing accurate information. The planning process is ongoing and no project has been finalized. If there are errors in the decisions, they can be contested. We openly and transparently present our municipal council resolutions to the public. We do not factor in any specific opinion or interest in our resolutions. The statements made about council members who voted in favor are deeply saddening. I will not entertain negative remarks about any of our council members."
"We support eco-tourism and agro-tourism"
Mayor Aras expressed support for eco-tourism and agro-tourism, stating, "Eco-tourism and agro-tourism are highly significant today. We endorse the convergence of agriculture and tourism. The decision in question has no connection to the Akbelen matter."
Mayor Aras Takes Legal Action over Water Leaks
Addressing the issue of water leaks in Bodrum, Mayor Aras expressed renewed concern over a burst in the water pipeline in the Ali Kelle Forest area along the Bitez-Ortakent road, which led to injuries. He noted that an official report had been prepared for the area and that legal proceedings had been initiated. He stated, "I have filed an application with the Civil Peace Court. I have requested the identification of the party responsible. CTP pipes are not suitable for Bodrum's infrastructure. They are not designed to withstand pressure."
Mayor Aras also emphasized that the situation observed in multiple neighborhoods in Bodrum impacts both human lives and the local economy. He underscored, "The cost of living in Bodrum should not be paid for with citizens' lives. I cannot accept this. Despite not being directly responsible, I cannot avoid being held accountable." He further emphasized that water loss also constitutes public harm.
Following his statement, Mayor Aras addressed questions from journalists.
