BODRUM WOMEN CREATE 53 METRES OF KNITTED SHADE CANOPIES
23.10.2026
Bodrum Municipality’s Women and Family Services Directorate and Atölye Mai have completed the first stage of the “Bodrum Women Knit for the Streets” project, bringing together 1,400 colourful knitted motifs to create decorative shade canopies for streets and public squares.
The project aims to highlight women’s craftsmanship while enhancing the town’s public spaces. Over the course of a month, participants knitted the motifs at workshops held at the Nazım Hikmet Library in Umurca Park, a venue designated by Bodrum Municipality, as well as at home and during informal gatherings with neighbours.
Last week, participants met in the garden of Atölye Mai for a gathering themed “Knitting and Picnicking”, where they joined some of the motifs together. At a second meeting, all 1,400 motifs were assembled, creating 53 metres of knitted canopy ready for installation. The first installation is planned for Sevgi Yolu in Turgutreis, with the project aiming to extend the total length of the canopies to 150 metres in subsequent stages.
The durability of the knitted canopies is also being tested under different conditions. The plan is to use them during the summer months and store them over winter so they can be reused for years to come.
Mayor Mandalinci thanked the women involved in the project, highlighting their contribution to local production and the town’s public spaces. He said he was pleased that the first stage had been completed in just one month through the women’s dedication and collective effort. He added that the project aimed both to support women’s participation in production and to bring distinctive features to Bodrum’s streets. Mandalinci also thanked the Women and Family Services Directorate and Atölye Mai for their contributions, adding that the municipality would continue to support collective initiatives that celebrate women’s work and strengthen solidarity.
Bodrum Municipality is expected to announce further details of the project’s second stage in due course.
