Bodrum Municipality has launched the “Bodrum Women Knit for the Streets” project in cooperation with Atölye Mai, bringing women together to create handmade installations for public spaces.

Led by the Women and Family Services Directorate, the project aims to make women’s work more visible while contributing to Bodrum’s urban character and public-space design. The first workshop was held at Nazım Hikmet Library in Umurca Park. Sessions will continue until 2 October, with participants able to prepare colourful knitted motifs at home, with neighbours or at the municipal workshop venue.

A total of 1,400 motifs will be brought together to create decorative street shading. The first 50-metre installation is planned for Sevgi Yolu in Turgutreis and is expected to be completed by 29 October. The project is later intended to extend to 150 metres.

Mayor Tamer Mandalinci joined participants at the first workshop and said the project would offer an alternative to conventional awnings and coverings by combining craftsmanship, public-space design and local identity.

“We shall bring together 1,400 colourful motifs made by hundreds of women to create an original installation that provides shade while adding to the character of our streets,” Mandalinci said. He added that a prototype was being tested under different conditions, with the intention of installing the shades during the summer months and storing them over winter so they can be reused in future years.

The opening workshop was also attended by Deputy Mayor Av. İdil Ekmekci, council members, neighbourhood heads, Women and Family Services Director Av. Keziban Gözde Çakıroğlu, Atölye Mai founder Seda Selçuk, knitting instructor Emine Ferah and municipal staff.

Workshops at Nazım Hikmet Library are being held from 11.00 to 16.00 until 2 October. Those wishing to take part or obtain further information can contact Bodrum Municipality’s Women and Family Services Directorate on 444 31 63.
