NOSTALGIC CINEMA DAYS BEGIN IN BODRUM

Bodrum Municipality’s Nostalgic Cinema Days began on Friday, 25 September at Sinema Otopark, the former Yeni Sinema in Tepecik Neighbourhood.

The opening night featured Bodrum Hâkimi, filmed in Bodrum and first released in 1976, starring Türkân Şoray and Kadir İnanır. The screening attracted strong interest from local residents. Mayor Tamer Mandalinci attended the event alongside deputy mayors, council members, collector Ali Şengün, Cinemarine Cinemas Chair Cenk Sezgin, Sinema Otopark operators Ahmet and Mustafa Özkeskin, members of the Karabağlı family and municipal representatives.

Speaking at the opening, Mayor Mandalinci highlighted Bodrum’s cultural heritage and the importance of preserving the town’s collective memory. He also thanked those who contributed to bringing the former cinema venue and its history back to public attention.

Members of the Karabağlı family, whose late relative Adil Karabağlı organised open-air film screenings at the venue between 1972 and 1989, recalled the site as not only a cinema but also an important social meeting place for Bodrum residents.

Nostalgic photographs of Yeni Sinema and local residents from Ali Şengün’s Old Bodrum Archive were displayed during the event, while commemorative plaques were presented to contributors. Stalls were also set up to recreate the atmosphere of traditional open-air cinema nights, offering sunflower seeds in newspaper cones, local soft drinks and Bodrum Municipality’s mandarin drink, Mandalinata.

The programme will continue on Saturday, 26 September at 20.00 with a screening of the 1974 film Yazık Oldu Yarınlara, starring Kadir İnanır, Mesut Engin, Nuray Belbüken, Aliye Rona, Nihat Ziyalan and Semih Sezerli.
