The event was organised in cooperation with Bodrum District Governor’s Office, Bodrum Municipality’s Culture, Arts and Social Affairs Directorate, the Directorate of Neighbourhood Affairs and the Bodrum Neighbourhood Heads’ Association. Gümüşlük residents, local business owners, Bodrum Neighbourhood Heads’ Association Deputy Chair Göksel Çamlı and project coordinator Merve Okutucu attended the event.

This year’s event also included symbolic participation from Kos. The Municipality of Kos reduced lighting at selected points, including the exterior lighting of the municipal building, in support of the initiative.

Mayor Tamer MANDALİNCİ thanked Mayor Theodosis NIKITARAS of Kos and the people of Kos for joining the call. Mandalinci said the simultaneous action on both sides of the Aegean carried an important message for environmental protection, awareness of light pollution and the strengthening of friendship between neighbouring communities.

Mayor NIKITARAS also thanked Bodrum for the invitation and said Kos Municipality was pleased to support the initiative. He said the shared action would contribute not only to environmental awareness, but also to friendship and cooperation between the two local communities. 

The “8.8 Shine, Shine Bodrum” event aims to encourage more careful use of lighting, energy saving, protection of the night-time ecosystem and the preservation of the starry sky for future generations.

As the lights dimmed in Gümüşlük, the message of the event became clear: seeing the sky does not require more light, but a little less.
