DESIGN IDEAS FOR DEGIRMENBURNU HISTORICAL WINDMILLS AWARDED IN BODRUM

The award ceremony, exhibition and colloquium for the Bodrum Değirmenburnu Historic Windmills and Surrounding Area Idea Project Competition have been held at Herodot Cultural Centre.

Organised by Bodrum Municipality in cooperation with the Bodrum Branch of the Chamber of Architects, the competition was the first national architectural idea competition held in the municipality’s history.

The programme was attended by Bodrum Mayor and architect Tamer Mandalinci, his wife and architect Sezil Mandalinci, deputy mayors, municipal officials, representatives of professional chambers, jury members, competitors and guests.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Mandalinci said Değirmenburnu was not only one of Bodrum’s symbolic landmarks, but also an important part of the town’s history, production culture and collective memory.

Mayor Mandalinci said the municipality had worked with professional organisations and experts to develop ideas for restoring and reactivating the historic windmills area, adding that the competition had received strong interest from across Türkiye.

A total of 78 projects were submitted to the competition. Following preliminary checks, 76 projects were evaluated by the jury. Three equivalent awards, five equivalent honourable mentions and two purchase awards were presented.

Equivalent awards were given to the teams led by Fatma Zeynep Altınbaşlı Koç, M. Batu Kepekçioğlu and Sacit Arda Karaatlı.

Equivalent honourable mentions were presented to Mehmet Erdönmez and his team, Emre Özcan, Sevgi Türkkan Sroka and her team, Fuat Arabacı, and Burak Pelenk and his team. Purchase awards were given to Gencay Çubuk and his team, and Hüseyin Öztürk and his team.

Gamze Bağcı, Chair of the Bodrum Branch of the Chamber of Architects, said architectural competitions were among the key design processes shaping the future of cities and thanked all project teams, jury members and contributors.

Following the award ceremony, jury members and competitors came together for a colloquium to discuss the submitted projects, the evaluation process and design approaches for the area.

The exhibition featuring the competition projects will remain open to visitors at Herodot Cultural Centre until 20 August 2026.
