Bodrum Municipality marked World Environment Day on 5 June with a programme of events aimed at raising environmental awareness and encouraging more sustainable ways of living.


Organised by the municipality’s Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste Solutions, the programme began on Friday 5 June with a parade from Milta Bodrum Marina to Belediye Square. Among those taking part were Kadriye Erkal Yıldırım, Head of the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality District Services 1st Region Department, Deputy Mayors Ercan Pehlivan and Kanat Hasan Özsert, Municipal Council Member and General Coordinator Emel Çakaloğlu, department directors, municipal staff, Misgibi 1 Bodrum volunteers, students and local residents.

The celebrations continued on Saturday 6 June with a festival programme at Umurca Park, attended by Deputy Mayors Tolga Karademir, Kanat Hasan Özsert and Ercan Pehlivan, together with department directors, students and many members of the public.

As part of the programme, the Directorate of Agricultural Services distributed seeds to support local production, while the Directorate of Parks and Gardens held a planting workshop designed to encourage appreciation for nature. One of the day’s most notable activities was a used cooking oil collection campaign organised by the Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste, under which residents who brought four litres of waste vegetable oil received one litre of fresh cooking oil. The Directorate of Cleaning Services also organised a container and cleaning vehicle painting activity.

Throughout the day, visitors took part in environmental games, competitions and workshops, while receiving information on recycling, zero waste practices and sustainable living.

In a statement, Mayor Tamer Mandalinci said protecting Bodrum’s unique natural environment was not a responsibility for a single day, but for every day of the year. He added that the municipality would continue its zero-waste-focused projects without interruption in pursuit of a more sustainable future and a cleaner Bodrum.

Municipal officials said awareness work and environmental education related to zero waste and the fight against climate change would continue throughout the year.
