ZERO WASTE EDUCATION PROGRAMME REACHES STUDENTS ACROSS BODRUM

Bodrum Municipality has carried out a wide-ranging Zero Waste Education programme for primary, secondary and high school students as part of its efforts to strengthen environmental awareness among young people.

Delivered by the Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste, the programme aims to help students develop environmental awareness and adopt more sustainable habits. During the second term of the 2025–2026 academic year, training was provided to 1,400 students across 14 schools. In addition, 225 pupils from seven primary schools who wished to visit the municipality’s Category 1 Waste Collection Centre were given an introduction to the facility.

The sessions, led by Environmental Technicians Filiz Hekimoğlu and Zeynep Uyar Yabacı, covered the collection, separation and recycling of mixed packaging waste. Students were also informed in detail about the environmental harm caused when hazardous waste, used batteries, electrical and electronic waste, waste vegetable oils and expired medicines are disposed of with general rubbish.

The programme also introduced students to the 14 different waste categories collected at Bodrum Municipality’s Category 1 Waste Collection Centre, explaining how these materials are stored and sent for recycling.

As part of the initiative, a total of 1,525 tap aerators were distributed to students in order to raise awareness of water and energy saving.

Although the current programme has been completed as planned, Bodrum Municipality said training sessions could continue in schools and at the Category 1 Waste Collection Centre until the end of the academic year if further requests are submitted through the District Directorate of National Education.
