3,000 BUILDINGS TO BE ASSESSED UNDER NEW BODRUM EARTHQUAKE RISK PROJECT

Bodrum Municipality has signed a protocol with the Muğla Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers, part of TMMOB, to assess the earthquake safety of buildings across the district and create a building stock inventory.

The agreement was signed at Bodrum Municipality by Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, Muğla Branch Chair Levent Çimen, Bodrum Representative Metin Soylu and members of the chamber’s boards. Under the first phase of the project, 3,000 buildings in Bodrum will be surveyed over a period of six months.

Speaking at the ceremony, Levent Çimen said similar work had already been completed in Milas and Menteşe, adding that the 6 February earthquakes had once again shown the importance of identifying weaknesses in existing building stock, particularly in structures built before 1999.

Mayor Tamer Mandalinci said the study would provide a critical starting point for identifying unsafe buildings, supporting urban regeneration and helping Bodrum become more resilient in the face of earthquake risk. He added that buildings identified as risky would be reported to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change so that the necessary steps could be taken.
