ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING & SHORELINE CLEAN-UP CONDUCTED ON TURGUTREİS COAST

A coastal clean-up and data collection study was carried out on the Turgutreis shoreline in cooperation with Bodrum Municipality and the Muğla branch of the Turkish Environmental Education Foundation (TÜRÇEV) within the European Environment Agency’s Marine Litter Watch programme.

The event took place on 30 April 2026 at the Public Beach next to D-Marin in Turgutreis and was attended by TÜRÇEV representatives, staff from Bodrum Municipality’s Directorate of Support Services and Directorate of Cleaning Services, and pupils from Zeyyat Mandalinci Primary School.

Conducted over a 200-metre stretch of coastline in line with Marine Litter Watch (MLW) criteria, the study lasted around one hour and involved a detailed survey of the area. Waste collected along the shore was sorted and recorded by type. Cigarette ends, glass fragments and plastic pieces, all of which pose a direct threat to nature and marine life, were counted and classified separately.

Throughout the activity, members of the public in the area were also informed about the harmful effects of litter on the environment. In order to support continued monitoring and ensure data consistency, the coordinates of the survey point were recorded.

At the end of the event, a total of 38.5 kilograms of waste had been collected from the shoreline.
