A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY IN KADIKALESİ
13.04.2026
The Culture and Nature Walk organised by the City History and Lelegian Civilisation Research and Application Unit under Bodrum Municipality’s Directorate of Culture, Arts and Social Affairs continued on the Kadıkalesi route on Sunday, 12 April with strong participation.
Led by municipal archaeologist Serap Topaloğlu, the programme introduced participants to the history of Peksimet neighbourhood and the traces of the Lelegians, Bodrum’s earliest known civilisation. Information was also shared on the origin of the name Kadıkalesi and the area’s historical development from antiquity to the present day.
During the walk, participants visited Kadıkalesi Church, also known as the Greek Orthodox Church, where they were informed about the building’s architectural features, the Greek community once living in the area, and the remains that survive today. The castle and defensive walls were also examined, with emphasis placed on the area’s role during the Ottoman period as an important residential and logistical centre.
The final part of the route focused on the Ottoman-era fountains and cemetery near the public beach. Their inscriptions, construction dates and historical significance were explained in detail.
Following the walk, participants gathered for a picnic at Kadıkalesi Public Beach, where the day continued with conversation, shared stories and games. Those attending expressed their appreciation for the event and their wish for the Culture and Nature Walks to continue.
Activities aimed at promoting Bodrum’s cultural heritage will continue in line with a planned programme.
