CALL FOR DESIGN IDEAS COMPETITION: BODRUM’S DEĞIRMENBURNU WINDMILLS AND SURROUNDINGS
25.03.2026
Bodrum Municipality, in cooperation with the Bodrum Representation of the Chamber of Architects under the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), has launched the “Bodrum Değirmenburnu Historic Windmills and Surrounding Area Ideas Competition” in a bid to carry the district’s landmark windmills into the future.
Announced on 25 March 2026, the national competition has a total prize fund of 5.5 million TL and seeks contemporary, innovative proposals that respect the site’s historic character. Prepared for the Değirmenburnu area, which forms part of Bodrum’s skyline and holds the status of a natural and archaeological protected site, the competition timetable has now been confirmed and the process has officially begun.
Organised as a single-stage, open national competition with the support of the Bodrum Representation of the Chamber of Architects, the initiative is looking for contemporary solutions that preserve the historic heritage of the area while reflecting its spirit of place, maintaining landscape integrity and strengthening its potential for public use.
Innovative Proposals in Harmony with History & Nature
Focusing on protected built elements within the area’s cultural landscape, including the historic windmills and a cistern, the competition will provide a platform for innovative proposals from architects, urban planners and landscape architects. Participants are expected to approach this highly sensitive site with care and develop ideas that both protect the natural environment and add value to urban life in Bodrum.
Total Prize Fund of 5.5 Million TL
The competition is open to architects, urban planners and landscape architects registered with professional chambers affiliated to TMMOB, either individually or as part of a team. A total of 5.5 million TL will be awarded to the strongest entries placed in the competition.
