“WOMEN AND ALZHEIMER AWARENESS PROGRAMME” HELD IN BODRUM

As part of International Women’s Day on 8 March, Bodrum Municipality’s Women and Family Services Directorate held a “Women and Alzheimer Awareness Programme” in partnership with the Bodrum Branch of the Alzheimer’s Association of Türkiye and the Bodrum Tradespeople, Industrialists and Business People Association (BESİAD).
The event took place at Bodrum Municipality’s Ali Hakan Aykan Culture and Arts Centre and aimed to raise awareness of women’s health, brain health and Alzheimer’s disease. Specialist speakers shared information and experience with participants.
Opening remarks were delivered by Municipal Council Member İdil Ekmekci, representing Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, alongside neurology specialist and Bodrum Branch Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association of Türkiye, Associate Professor Dr Melek Kandemir Yılmaz, and BESİAD Chair Elvan Bilgin. Attendees included Republican People’s Party (CHP) Bodrum District Chair Tuna Işın, Bodrum District Women’s Branch Chair Umut Anıl Özdoğan, civil society representatives and local residents.
In the first session, Associate Professor Dr Melek Kandemir Yılmaz delivered a presentation titled “Women and Alzheimer: What Can I Do to Protect My Brain Health?”, outlining ways to support women’s brain health and measures that can be taken against Alzheimer’s disease. This was followed by a presentation by obstetrics and gynaecology specialist Dr Orçun Koçak, titled “From Hormones to Neurons: The Neurological Side of Menopause”, focusing on the impact of menopause on women’s neurological health.
The programme continued with a talk titled “Being a Caregiver”, moderated by Tuna Altunkaya, Chair of the Bodrum Seafarers’ Association. The discussion covered care processes for people living with Alzheimer’s disease, the challenges faced by caregivers and potential solutions.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to contributors to the programme.
