About the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 22 Aralık 2015 to encourage the participation of women and girls in education and research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Worldwide, gender stereotypes and bias continue to discourage girls and women from scientific fields. Today, fewer than 30% of researchers are women. According to UNESCO data, only around 30% of female students choose STEM fields in higher education, with particularly low participation in information and communication technologies, engineering and the basic sciences.
The day supports the aims of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, including full and equal participation in science, stronger gender equality, and the empowerment of women.
