Bodrum Municipality continues its district-wide efforts to combat environmental pollution caused by littering and the illegal dumping of waste.

Alongside routine cleaning, municipal teams from the Directorate of Cleaning Affairs are also responding to unauthorised dumping of rubbish, garden waste and excavation debris. Plastics, garden waste and construction materials left in wooded areas, vacant plots and along roadsides are causing both environmental damage and additional workload for cleaning teams, particularly where garden and excavation waste is dumped without permission.

The municipality also noted that single-use items thrown from vehicles remain a significant source of pollution. Waste left along roadsides can be carried by rainfall into stream beds and then directly into the sea, underlining the need for greater care and responsibility from drivers.

Extensive On-the-Ground Work and Enforcement Support

Cleaning teams continue work 24/7, including targeted clean-ups in areas outside routine schedules to prevent pollution from spreading. During inspections and clean-up operations, teams identify those responsible through documents found in waste—such as invoices and warranty papers—and report cases to Municipal Police (Zabıta) teams so that the necessary penalties can be applied.

Municipal officials reiterated that garden waste must be put out only on designated days and bagged, noting that unbagged waste or waste placed out on the wrong day disrupts cleaning operations. It was also stated that enforcement action is taken against those who do not comply.

Following heavy rain in Bitez, teams also carried out a comprehensive clean-up of large volumes of waste that had been washed into the sea via streams and then blown back onto the shoreline during storms. Similar shoreline clean-ups will continue at other beaches when weather conditions allow.

With the message “This nature belongs to all of us”, the municipality stressed that environmental pollution is not only a visual issue, but a serious threat to soil, water, ecosystems and the future. Residents were encouraged to act responsibly and report problems to the municipality when encountered.
