MAYOR MANDALİNCİ MEETS WITH JOURNALISTS ON WORKING JOURNALISTS’ DAY

Mayor Tamer Mandalinci met with members of the press at an event held to mark 10 January ‘Working Journalists’ Day’, delivering a strong message in support of press freedom and professional journalism.

The gathering, organised by Bodrum Municipality’s Directorate of Press, Media and Public Relations, brought together local and national journalists, representatives of press associations, municipal officials and staff. Speakers highlighted that 10 January is not merely a day of celebration, but also a symbol of journalists’ ongoing struggle for rights, dignity and professional recognition.

During the meeting, journalists underlined the responsibility inherent in their profession and the sacrifices made to ensure the public’s right to accurate and reliable information. The need to clearly distinguish professional journalism from unverified social media content in an era of rapid digital transformation was brought into sharp focus. Journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as those currently imprisoned, were also commemorated.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Mandalinci described journalism as a public service that goes beyond being a profession. He stressed that a society’s access to trustworthy information depends on journalists’ dedication, often under difficult and risky conditions. Reaffirming the municipality’s solidarity with the press, he stated that local administrations have a responsibility to stand by journalists whenever they face challenges.

“The pen, the thought and the ink of the press must all be free.”, Mayor Mandalinci said, adding that only a free press can guide society from darkness into light. He concluded by reaffirming Bodrum Municipality’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the media and supporting journalists in carrying out their duties freely and responsibly.
