RECYCLED MATERIALS GIVE NEW LIFE TO BODRUM’S CLEANING INFRASTRUCTURE

Bodrum Municipality continues to broaden its sustainability and recycling initiatives as part of its environmentally responsible local governance approach. Through innovative reuse practices, municipal teams are transforming discarded materials into functional cleaning equipment while extending the lifespan of existing assets.

The Directorate of Cleaning Services is at the centre of these efforts, recovering materials that would otherwise be scrapped and repairing items at risk of becoming waste. At the department’s maintenance facility in Konacık, metal components and fencing that have reached the end of their original use are collected and repurposed to produce green mesh container enclosures installed around waste bins. These enclosures help prevent visual pollution while improving urban order.

In 2025 alone, 171 container enclosures were repaired and 93 new units were manufactured using recycled materials.

Practical, Low-Cost Solutions from Municipal Teams

Municipal staff have also developed customised cleaning tools to improve efficiency for street-cleaning personnel. By adding practical extensions to handcarts using entirely recycled materials, teams have created specialised cleaning equipment now actively used in daily operations, boosting workforce productivity.

Further Recycling and Reuse Practices

Plastic detergent containers used in cleaning operations are also recycled. Once cut and combined with discarded wood, they are converted into dustpans and returned to active use. This approach prevents plastic and metal waste from entering the environment while generating significant cost savings.

Additionally, waste containers with deteriorated bases are repaired rather than discarded. In 2025, 1,349 waste containers were restored and returned to service, extending their usability and reducing replacement costs.

Municipal officials stated that recycling and reuse practices will continue to expand, reaffirming Bodrum Municipality’s commitment to protecting the environment while using public resources efficiently.
