BODRUM MUNICIPALITY INVITED TO THE BARCELONA WORLD METROPOLITAN SUMMIT

Bodrum Joins Mediterranean Cities in Developing Climate and Water Policies

Bodrum Municipality has been invited to the Barcelona World Metropolitan Summit held in Barcelona, organised by MedCities, the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME) and AVITEM.

The summit brought together Mediterranean municipalities to address water scarcity and the climate crisis, aiming to establish a joint regional policy roadmap ahead of the Rome 2026 Euro-Mediterranean Water Forum and the Riyadh 2027 World Water Forum.

Bodrum’s Contribution: Water-Efficient Hydroponic Farming

Representing Türkiye, Bodrum Municipality shared its hydroponic agriculture project as a model for sustainable water use. Developed under the EU-funded PRIMA Front-Ag Nexus Programme in Ortakent, the project aligns with the WEFE (Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems) approach. It enables up to 70% water savings, requires no soil, and adapts efficiently to climate change, offering a replicable solution for drought-prone regions.

International Interest & Cooperation Requests

Following Bodrum’s presentation, several Mediterranean participants requested technical visits to study the hydroponic system on-site and explore opportunities for replication. This response positioned Bodrum as a model municipality in regional climate policy, not only managing challenges but producing actionable, science-based solutions.

A Local Model with Global Impact

The summit highlighted Bodrum’s proactive role in developing innovative adaptation strategies, strengthening local capacity through EU collaborations and promoting knowledge sharing across the Mediterranean.

This recognition confirms Bodrum Municipality’s emerging position as a regional leader, a city that transforms climate challenges into sustainable opportunities for the future.
