EU-FUNDED “15-MINUTE CITIES” CONSORTIUM GATHERS IN BODRUM

Representatives from seven European countries meet to discuss sustainable mobility and pedestrianisation within the framework of the EU-supported TÜBİTAK International 15-Minute Cities Project

The 15-Minute Cities Consortium, jointly coordinated by Bodrum Municipality’s Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste and Gazi University, convened in Bodrum as part of the EU-funded TÜBİTAK International 15-Minute Cities Project.

The two-day meetings, held on 6–7 October, brought together 17 representatives from Bodrum Municipality, Gazi University, Bielefeld Municipality (Germany), Vision5 (Netherlands), Lund University (Sweden), University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), Cracow University of Technology (Poland) and Brașov Municipality (Romania).

Focus on Sustainable Mobility and Pedestrianisation

Hosted by Bodrum Municipality, the first day of the event focused on project progress updates and an exchange of experiences among partners regarding pedestrianisation practices in their respective cities. Following the session, participants toured the Bodrum Castle, exploring the town’s historical and cultural heritage.

On the second day, Bodrum Municipality presented its pilot pedestrianisation project on Karcı Street in Bahçelievler neighbourhood, sharing detailed information on the initiative’s design and community impact. The delegation later visited Turgutreis, where they met with Bahçelievler Neighbourhood Head (Muhtar) Fatma Akalan and examined recent pedestrian-friendly improvements and the newly renovated cycling route.

Throughout the meetings, consortium members discussed challenges and differing perspectives on pedestrianisation, explored ways to bridge policy gaps, and evaluated outcomes from pilot regions. Future goals and cooperation strategies for the project were also outlined.

Mayor Mandalinci: “Our goal is to expand the project across the district.”

Expressing his thoughts on the project’s progress in Bodrum, Mayor Tamer Mandalinci stated:

“One of our key priorities is to successfully implement and expand this project across the entire district. With the support of our experts, local representatives, businesses and residents, we aim to integrate sustainable mobility and pedestrianisation practices into suitable streets and neighbourhoods throughout Bodrum.”
