MUNICIPAL TEAMS STEP UP CLEANING OPERATIONS IN STREAMS
02.10.2025
Bodrum Municipality carries out extensive cleaning works in streams and flood-prone areas following heavy rainfall warnings
In response to a severe weather alert issued by the Turkish State Meteorological Service, Bodrum Municipality has intensified its field operations across streams and areas at risk of flooding.
Teams from the Directorates of Senitation Affairs, Parks and Green Areas, Civil Works and Support Services joined forces with the Metropolitan Municipality to clear waterways and their surroundings. The works have focused particularly on areas that experienced flooding in previous years. Vegetation in stream beds was trimmed and accumulated waste was removed to ensure a smooth water flow.
Gully Cleaning and Drainage Works
The Municipality’s Civil Works Department has continued its gully-cleaning programme, which began in August. Priority was given to flood-prone areas, including Kumbahçe Beach, where rainwater drainage channels and stream mouths were cleared.
Specialised equipment provided by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality (ESPAR vehicle) and additional support from the General Directorate of Highways enabled a more comprehensive operation on the city’s main roads.
Volunteers Join the Effort
The initiative also saw community involvement. In partnership with the “Mis Gibi 1 Bodrum” (meaning “A Breath of Fresh Bodrum”) environmental initiative, municipal teams and volunteers carried out a clean-up in Müskebi District. Deputy Mayor Kanat Hasan Özsert, municipal council members and citizens participated, collecting large amounts of litter, much of it single-use plastic waste.
Bodrum Municipality emphasised that stream and gully cleaning will continue throughout the season, with coordinated efforts between local authorities, regional institutions and civil society to reduce the risk of flooding and improve environmental conditions.
