BODRUM MARKS EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK WITH EVENTS IN TURGUTREİS
17.09.2025
Residents of all ages came together in Turgutreis to celebrate European Mobility Week with cycling, yoga, children’s activities and a car-free street
Bodrum joined cities across Europe in celebrating European Mobility Week under this year’s theme of “Mobility for All”. The programme, coordinated nationally by the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye and supported by the European Commission, drew strong participation from local residents in Turgutreis.
Car-Free Streets & Community Activities
On 16–17 September, Bodrum Municipality closed Karcı (Doyuran) Street to traffic, transforming it into a pedestrian-friendly zone filled with activities. The event began with a bicycle parade along Gazi Mustafa Kemal Boulevard, with Bodrum Municipal Councillor İdil Ekmekci joining the ride. Later, the Şevket Sabancı Cultural Centre hosted a free yoga session organised by the municipality.
Throughout the day, children from Zeyyat Mandalinci Primary School, Amiral Turgut Reis Primary School and Vedat Türkmen Secondary School took part in games and competitions supported by the Directorate of Women and Family Services. Their artwork, themed “The Street I Imagine”, was displayed in a public exhibition. A bicycle repair workshop also attracted keen interest, while families received waste battery boxes and water-saving devices to promote environmental awareness.
Linked to the 15-Minute Cities Project
Beyond its role in Mobility Week, the initiative formed part of Bodrum’s participation in the “15-Minute Cities Project”, conducted in cooperation with Gazi University, supported by TÜBİTAK, and coordinated by Lund University with partners from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Türkiye.
During the event, project teams gathered feedback from shopkeepers and pedestrians on the temporary pedestrianisation scheme, ensuring that insights contribute both to future European Mobility Week programmes and to the development of more equitable, sustainable and inclusive urban solutions.
