31.08.2025
The second clean-up of the year under the European Environment Agency’s Marine Litter Watch programme was held at Turgutreis Beach
Bodrum Municipality, in cooperation with the Turkish Environmental Education Foundation (TÜRÇEV) Muğla Branch, held the second clean-up of the year under the European Environment Agency’s “Marine Litter Watch” (MLW) programme at Turgutreis Beach on Friday, 29 August.
Broad Participation in Environmental Action
The event brought together Deputy Mayor Ercan Pehlivan, TÜRÇEV Muğla Coordinator Gürcan Kaya, staff from the Municipality’s Directorates of Support Services, Senitation Affairs, Climate Change and Zero Waste Solutions, alongside representatives of local Blue Flag hotels and local citizens.
7,585 Pieces of Waste Collected
Following MLW’s monitoring criteria, a 200-metre section of coastline was cleaned during the one-hour activity. All waste was categorised, with cigarette butts, glass and plastic fragments carefully counted. In total, 151.5 kilograms of waste, amounting to 7,585 individual items, were collected.
Coordinates of the monitored area were recorded to ensure continuity of data, and participants received information about waste types and marine pollution.
Protecting the Marine Ecosystem
Through its collaboration with European and local partners, Bodrum Municipality emphasised that the Marine Litter Watch programme is designed not only to raise awareness but also to prevent marine pollution and preserve the marine ecosystem for future generations.
