NUTRITION, HYDRATION & SAFETY: HOW TO ENJOY SUMMER THE HEALTHY WAY

From food safety to smart exercise habits, the municipality offers practical tips for a safe summer season. Expert guidance highlights the importance of balanced nutrition, hydration, and avoiding midday heat.

Bodrum Municipality is drawing attention to the impact of rising summer temperatures on eating habits and physical activity, offering important advice to help residents stay healthy and reduce potential risks.

Dietitian K. Miray Aker Esen from the Directorate of Women and Family Services shared the following recommendations:

Adopt Healthy Eating Habits to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk

Instead of frequently consuming ice cream and fizzy drinks to cool down, opt for seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables. These not only aid digestion but also provide a refreshing effect. Portion control for fresh fruits is important to maintain blood sugar balance. Avoid fried foods, simple carbohydrates, packaged snacks and high-salt products, as they can increase fat levels in the blood and raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases during hot weather.

Stay Hydrated to Prevent Fluid Loss

Hot weather increases fluid and mineral loss through sweating. While most people know that water is lost through sweat and urination, significant water loss also occurs through breathing. On average, individuals lose about 2,500 millilitres of water per day, which must be replenished through food and drink.

Be Aware of Food Poisoning Risks

High temperatures accelerate food spoilage, so avoid consuming food sold in the open during hot weather. Meat, milk and dairy products carry a higher risk of causing food poisoning and should always be stored in refrigerators or cold storage.

Adapt Physical Activity to the Season

The type and timing of exercise are crucial in summer. Activities such as running and brisk walking can lead to excessive sweating and fluid loss. Ensure adequate water intake and replace lost minerals during exercise. Avoid strenuous activity during midday when the sun’s rays are strongest; instead, opt for early morning or evening sessions.

By following these guidelines, residents can enjoy a healthier and more comfortable summer.
