BODRUM MUNICIPALITY LAUNCHES TÜRKİYE’S FIRST FLOATING SEAWATER PURIFICATION PLATFORM

Bodrum Municipality has unveiled an innovative floating seawater purification platform that operates entirely on renewable energy, producing 20 cubic metres of clean, non-potable water daily from the sea.

Developed by the Directorate of Climate Change & Zero Waste Solutions in partnership with Blue Hybrid Solutions, the project, titled “From the Sea to Life: Clean Water for Bodrum”, was introduced to the public at a launch event in Bitez Marina attended by local and regional officials, company representatives, press members and residents.

A First for Türkiye and the World

The platform is a pioneering, environmentally friendly system powered solely by solar panels and two wind turbines. It transfers purified water to a 20-ton onshore storage tank via a hose certified for safe contact with drinking water. The water will be used for park and roadside irrigation, emergency needs and, when required, public consumption.

By producing clean water directly from the sea, the project will save an estimated 7,000 tonnes of freshwater annually and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 500 tonnes.

Muhammet Çoplan, co-founder of Blue Hybrid Solutions, highlighted the global significance of the innovation:

“This platform is more than technology, it is a sustainable solution powered by nature itself. It stands as a world-first example of renewable energy-driven seawater purification, born from an idea and realised through dedicated innovation.”

Sustainable Water Management for the Future

Ezgi Acer Çetinkaya, Director of Climate Change and Zero Waste at Bodrum Municipality, underlined the project’s broader vision:

“This is not just a technical solution, it’s proof that technology and nature can work hand in hand. Guided by the leadership of Mayor Mandalinci, we are determined to protect Bodrum not just for today, but for future generations.”

Mayor Tamer Mandalinci emphasised the role of local governments in addressing climate change:

“Climate change, drought, forest fires and reduced access to water are urgent issues worldwide. The municipality is committed to being part of the solution. After 25 days of operation, tests show the system is highly efficient, environmentally safe and completely powered by renewable energy. Projects like this are essential to building the Bodrum and Türkiye of tomorrow.”

The system is currently undergoing final testing and regulatory approval by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change. Once approved, it will officially begin supplying water for municipal and community use.
