TURGUTREİS’ ARCHAEOLOGICAL STORY CAPTIVATES LOCALS IN OPEN-AIR TALK

As part of the summer cultural programme, Bodrum Municipality held an open-air cultural talk on the archaeological heritage of Turgutreis and its surroundings. Hosted in the garden of the Şevket Sabancı Culture & Art Center, the event was organized by the Directorate of Culture & Social Affairs.

Municipal archaeologist Serap Topaloğlu led the presentation, offering participants a rich overview of the area’s multi-layered history. From the Leleg city of Termera and the ancient settlement of Strobilos (modern Aspat) to relics of the Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman periods, Topaloğlu highlighted the region’s enduring cultural significance. Visuals accompanied detailed explanations of traditional agricultural terraces, windmills, cisterns, rock tombs, churches and even a volcanic crater.

Speaking at the event, Topaloğlu emphasized that Turgutreis is not only known for its natural beauty but also for a continuous cultural heritage stretching back thousands of years. She stressed the importance of preserving this legacy, noting that history, from sponge diving to maritime trade, continues to shape the identity of Bodrum today.

Representing Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, Deputy Mayor Ahmet Yıldızhan and Turgutreis Neighborhood Head Hasan Gökhan Satılmış were also in attendance, along with many interested residents. The talk concluded with a lively Q&A session and widespread appreciation for the municipality’s efforts to promote cultural awareness and heritage conservation.
