FROM DISASTER READINESS: TO ACTION: BAK TEAM TRAINS FOR ACCREDITATION
28.06.2025
Bodrum Municipality’s Light Urban Search and Rescue Team (BAK – meaning “Bodrum Search and Rescue Team”) continues its intensive training sessions as it works toward official accreditation by AFAD. On June 25, the team gathered at the Yalıkavak Public Works Meeting Hall for the latest in a series of training programs led by the Disaster Affairs Directorate.
Out of 65 municipal volunteers, a dedicated group of 34 has been selected to receive full integration training. The session was conducted by Disaster Affairs Director and BAK Team Leader Kenan Apaydın, Deputy Leader Engin Doğan and staff member S. Kaan Yorga. The training covered essential skills and knowledge required to become an accredited rescue unit under the AFAD Urban Search and Rescue system.
Topics included the mission and structure of the Disaster Affairs Directorate, team formation and responsibilities, communication protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and the national accreditation process (KAVKAS). Field exercises focused on discipline, team coordination and tactical drills conducted in open-air conditions.
“We are only three sessions away from the final accreditation exam”, stated Apaydın. “Once completed, the team will be the first officially accredited municipal search and rescue team in Muğla province. The enthusiasm and commitment from our volunteers is truly inspiring.”.
In the coming months, the team will undergo further practical drills, including rope techniques, navigation and Haz-Mat (hazardous materials) training, ahead of the Urban Search and Rescue Accreditation Exam scheduled for August.
