PROTECTING THE BLUE: THIRD PHASE OF SEABED CLEANUP CONTINUES IN TURGUTREİS
18.06.2025
Bodrum Municipality continued its long-running environmental campaign with the sixth stage of the “Sea is Best in BLUE” seabed cleanup project, this time focusing on the Turgutreis neighborhood.
Now in its eleventh year, the campaign aims to protect Bodrum’s iconic turquoise waters and raise awareness about marine pollution. Organized by the Directorate of Support Services and the Department of Senitation Services, the event brought together a team of volunteer municipal divers who conducted an underwater cleanup operation along the Turgutreis coastline.
Representing Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, Deputy Mayor Kanat Hasan Özsert attended the event alongside Municipal Council Member Necati Altun, Turgutreis Headman Hasan Gökhan Satılmış and Bahçelievler Headman Fatma Akalan.
A total of 62 kilograms of waste was removed from the seabed. To promote environmental awareness, the recovered debris was publicly displayed on the Turgutreis shore before being transferred to Bodrum’s Class 1 Waste Collection Center in Konacık for proper recycling.
Deputy Mayor Özsert expressed cautious optimism about the decreasing volume of waste compared to previous years: “We used to collect 300–400 kilograms. Seeing this drop gives us hope. As Bodrum Municipality, we’re working for a cleaner, happier Bodrum, on land, at sea, and everywhere. The seabed cleanup campaign helps ensure both locals and visitors can enjoy cleaner waters. The Mayor, Mr. Tamer Mandalinci, places great importance on this issue.”.
The next phase of the campaign will take place on Wednesday, June 25, in the Yalıkavak neighborhood, as part of ongoing efforts to protect Bodrum’s marine environment.
