WHAT LIES BENEATH: AKYARLAR’S SEAFLOOR CLEANUP
11.06.2025
The fifth phase of municipality’s long-running “The Sea Looks Best in Blue” underwater clean-up campaign was recently held in the Akyarlar neighborhood. Now in its eleventh year, the project aims to preserve the marine ecosystem by removing waste from the seafloor across Bodrum’s iconic coves and beaches.
On June 11, a team of volunteer divers, coordinated by the municipality’s Support Services and Senitation Departments, retrieved approximately 75 kilograms of waste from the seabed, including unusual items like mobile phones and small fans. The collected debris was displayed along the Akyarlar coastline to raise public awareness before being sent to a first-class waste collection facility in Konacık for recycling.
The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Kanat Hasan Özsert, representing Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, as well as municiipal council members Tayyar Gündoğan, Necati Altun and Akyarlar’s local headwoman İsmihan Ulutaş.
“Ensuring the citizens have clean and safe access to the sea is a top priority”, said Özsert. “With 67 public beaches under our care, Bodrum Municipality remains committed to maintaining both land and sea cleanliness year-round.”.
The underwater clean-up campaign will continue in Turgutreis on June 18.
