Bodrum Municipality has kicked off its annual Underwater Cleanup Campaign under the slogan “Blue Suits the Sea Best”, starting this year’s efforts along the shores of Kumbahçe on May 14.

Organized by the Municipality’s Cleaning Services Department, the event marks the 11th year of this environmental initiative, which takes place weekly in different neighborhoods throughout Bodrum. The first cleanup of 2025 began at Paşatarlası Beach in Kumbahçe, where a volunteer team of municipal divers collected underwater waste and displayed it in Kumbahçe Square to raise awareness.

A total of 33 kilograms of waste was removed, an encouragingly low amount, which organizers interpreted as a sign of growing public awareness and environmental responsibility.

Representing Mayor Tamer Mandalinci at the event were General Coordinator Emel Çakaloğlu and Municipal Council Member Candan Topdemir. They were joined by Kumbahçe Neighborhood Head Zehra Bilgin, municipal staff and local residents.

“We’re proud to see fewer waste items underwater this year.”, said Emel Çakaloğlu. “This project is about more than cleaning, it’s about building a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility across the city. We thank everyone who contributed.”

The next stop of the campaign will be Gümbet on Wednesday, May 21.
