BODRUM’S CULTURAL JOURNEYS CONTINUE: A WALK THROUGH HISTORY AT MYNDOS
28.04.2025
The cultural and nature walks organized by Bodrum Municipality continued this week at the historic site of Myndos Ancient City.
The event, coordinated by ‘the Pedasa & Leleg Civilization Research & Application Department’ under the Directorate of Culture & Social Affairs, drew significant interest from history and nature enthusiasts. Among the participants were Deputy Mayor İlknur Ülküm Seferoğlu, former Gümüşlük Mayor Mehmet Ülküm and members of the municipal council.
The walk, guided by archaeologist Serap Topaloğlu, began with an overview of the city plan and the remains on Asar/Tavşan Island, including details about excavation work and the area's history. Participants explored ruins believed to be a bath structure and nearby church remains, following the ancient port city’s trail from the Leleg period through the era of Mausolos, Alexander the Great and the early Christian period.
On the slopes of Kocadağ, walkers examined surviving sections of Leleg-period city walls and Mausolos-era fortifications. The tour concluded with a visit to the presumed second harbor, known as the Western Harbor and its associated church and temple ruins.
At the start of the walk, former Gümüşlük Mayor Mehmet Ülküm reflected on the excavation efforts initiated in the early 2000s and highlighted the municipality’s support at that time. He called on all lovers of history and nature to help preserve Myndos Ancient City and its surroundings.
Over 200 participants expressed their excitement for the next cultural and nature walk and thanked Bodrum Municipality for organizing the event.
