The ancient city of Syangela in Alazeytin was the latest destination in the cultural and nature walks organised by Bodrum Municipality.

Now in its fourth edition, the walk was held by the ‘Pedasa & Leleg Civilisation Research Department’ under the Municipality’s Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs. The event drew strong interest once again, bringing together local nature enthusiasts, residents, guides and Çiftlik District Headman Hasan Kocaman.

Participants made their way through spring-clad landscapes to reach the ruins of Syangela, where they explored the ancient city’s remains and gained first-hand insights into its history and unique Leleg settlement architecture.

Archaeologist Serap Topaloğlu provided detailed information about the many cisterns in the area, linking them to the city’s historical water management systems. The attendees were also guided through the acropolis of Alazeytin, highlighting the temple, heroon (hero shrine) and other public buildings.

The group also visited the city’s necropolis and rural homes thought to reflect traditional Leleg architecture. Under the shade of centuries-old olive trees, participants wrapped up the visit by asking questions and engaging in lively discussions.

Locals expressed their gratitude to the Municipality and the ‘Pedasa & Leleg Civilisation Department’ for enabling this unique opportunity to explore the region’s ancient heritage under expert guidance.
