Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, known with his pen name “The Fisherman of Halikarnassos”, was honored on the 135th anniversary of his birth in a heartfelt ceremony held in Bodrum, the town he loved and called home.


The commemoration took place at his gravesite in Gönültepe, Gümbet, organized by the Municipality’s Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs. The event was attended by Deputy Mayors Kanat Özsert and İlknur Ülküm Seferoğlu, local officials, family members, students, literature enthusiasts and residents.

Educators Hatice Orman and Hatice Yücel, archaeologist Ayşe Temiz and Deputy Mayor Kanat Özsert shared reflections on Kabaağaçlı’s legacy. Members of his family, Joanne Aliye Noonan, Derya Kabaağaçlı, Ege Savaş and Sibel Kabaağaçlı, also expressed their gratitude to those keeping his memory alive.

Deputy Mayor Kanat Özsert stated:

“We remember the Fisherman of Halikarnassos with respect, love and gratitude. He was a journalist, writer, painter, poet, guide and researcher who left a lasting mark on our town’s growth and transformation. Hosting such a remarkable figure in this uniquely inspiring city fills us with pride. We shall continue to honor and celebrate the legacy of Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, one of the most treasured figures of our country and city, whose multifaceted personality continues to illuminate our path.”

The event continued with a musical performance by Lon Briet and Noemi Cingöz. A moving oratorio by students of ‘Hüseyin Boyacı Primary School’, depicting Kabaağaçlı’s love for nature and humanity, received great applause.

The programme concluded with participants laying flowers on his grave in remembrance.
