In celebration of International Zero Waste Day on March 30, Bodrum Municipality held a hands-on educational event for primary school students, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and environmental education.

As a pilot region for Türkiye’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change’s Zero Waste initiative, Bodrum continues to lead by example. The latest activity took place at the municipality’s First-Class Waste Collection Center, where students from Yalıkavak Neşe Doğan Primary School were invited to explore the facility and engage in creative upcycling workshops.

Accompanied by municipal department heads and environmental teams, kids learned about the recycling process firsthand and took part in workshops led by instructors from Bodrum Public Education Center. There, they transformed fabric scraps into accessories like hair ties and pouches and even created artwork on canvas using repurposed materials.

In a unique twist, students also brought their own old textiles to donate, which were cleaned and displayed at the center’s “waste shop”. In exchange, the kids selected upcycled products, experiencing a full circle of sustainable practice, from waste to renewed value. Environmental engineer Damla Dargan, manager of the Waste Collection Center, explained:

“We cleaned and prepared textile waste collected from bins across the district and displayed them in our shop. Students traded their used items for these upcycled products, discovering that recycling can be not only responsible but also creative and fun.”

The municipality will continue to expand its environmental outreach programs, aiming to build long-term awareness and action among future generations.
