BODRUM MUNICIPALITY PARTICIPATES IN THE GREEN AND RESILIENT CITIES WORK IN VALENCIA

Within the Green and Resilient Cities Working Group of the MedCities Mediterranean Cities Network, of which we are a member, Bodrum Municipality was invited to the programme held in Valencia, Spain, for the group’s first technical field visit.
Hosted by Valencia City Council, the meeting was attended by our Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste. The programme, which focused on reviewing good practices from leading European cities, also featured a presentation by our Municipality, which drew strong interest from participants.
In the presentation, we shared the transformation process of Umurça Parkı, describing how an underused area was redeveloped into a comprehensive urban park with walking routes, children’s and sports areas, an Archaeopark, an educational greenhouse and a library. Alongside the park’s social, cultural and educational contribution, it was also emphasised that the landscaping was designed with low-water-demand plant species suited to Bodrum’s natural environment.
As part of the programme, a “Green Coverage Index – Bodrum” report was prepared by officials of Valencia City Council using satellite data dated June 2025. The study identified Bodrum’s urban green coverage rate as 25%, exceeding the World Health Organization recommended minimum threshold of 20%, and indicating that Bodrum has a strong baseline in terms of green infrastructure.
During our engagements in Valencia, opportunities for cooperation with European municipalities and institutions were also explored. Initial steps were taken towards potential consortia in which Bodrum could serve as a pilot city for nature-based solutions and climate adaptation projects.
