PRESERVING BODRUM'S BLUE: SIXTH PHASE OF SEAFLOOR CLEANING IN TURGUTREIS

The sixth phase of the Underwater Cleaning organized by Bodrum Municipality was carried out in Turgutreis Bay.

This Underwater Cleaning event, initiated and organized by Bodrum Municipality for ten years, aims to contribute to the cleanliness of the seas and shores and to protect marine habitats. The event took place in Turgutreis on Wednesday, June 12.

Deputy Mayor Yaşar Çelikkan, representing the Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, along with Cleaning Services Director Serkan Kanik, Karabağ District Head (Mukhtar) Hakkı Aydoğan, Bahçelievler Muhtar Fatma Akalan and officials of TURÇEV Bodrum, participated in the event.

During the event, the volunteer diving team, who are also municipal personnel, removed waste from the sea. The 180 kilograms of waste, which were displayed in front of Turgutreis Fishermen’s Shelter were taken to the 1st Class Waste Collection Center in Konacık district for recycling.

Having began in Kumbahçe and continued in Yalıkavak, Bitez, Ortakent, Akyarlar and Turgutreis,  the underwater cleaning is planned to be carried out in thirteen different bays of the Bodrum Peninsula until August.

Deputy Mayor Yaşar Çelikkan noted a significant decrease in the amount of waste collected during the Underwater Cleaning event, saying, "We are pleased to see positive results from our awareness efforts. With the support of people, we will continue our efforts until we achieve the blue that suits Bodrum, ensuring a cleaner Bodrum and a cleaner sea."

The Underwater Cleaning event will continue on Wednesday, June 26, at Gümüşlük coast.
