As part of Türkiye’s Environment Week, Bodrum Municipality celebrated World Environment Day with a large-scale event under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
Organized by the municipality’s Directorate of Senitation Services, the event took place on Thursday, June 12, at Turgutreis Atatürk Square with the aim of raising environmental awareness in the community.
The celebration began with a parade from Turgutreis Marina to Atatürk Square and drew broad participation. Attendees included Deputy Mayors Tanju Aksu and Kanat Hasan Özsert representing Mayor Tamer Mandalinci; Ömer Bolat, the Provincial Director of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change; Kadriye Erkal Yıldırım, Head of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality’s District Services First Regional Department; Izzet Mert Kalem, Acting Branch Manager of Bodrum District Services; municipal officials; representatives from NGOs; students and teachers from Admiral Turgut Reis Primary School, Ortakent Dr. Hüseyin Mümtaz Ataman Primary School and Berhan Taha Bakır Kindergarten; as well as many local residents.
The event featured an exhibition of sculptures made from waste materials from the First-Class Waste Collection Center in Konacık Neighborhood, along with student-designed posters. Informational booths were set up by the Cleaning Services Directorate and the Directorate of Climate Change and Zero Waste. Several organizations contributed to the event with their own booths, including the “Take Care of Your Trash” Foundation, Misgibi1Bodrum Working Group, Bodrum Seed Association, Bodrum Art and Culture Association, and Kezban Alacık from the Compost Workshop. Additionally, the Bodrum Forest Management Office distributed 250 stone pine saplings to attendees.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Mayor Tanju Aksu emphasized the municipality’s unwavering commitment to cleanliness both on land and at sea, stating:
“We make it a priority to support any initiative that raises awareness against environmental pollution, because we know that protecting nature means protecting our future. The awareness we create today safeguards not only today, but also tomorrow. Events like this are meaningful examples of social responsibility that help shape our future. Let us take collective steps to protect our environment and preserve our natural world. Together, we can build a healthier, cleaner and more beautiful planet.
